How to switch to a natural shampoo

How to switch to a natural shampoo

In my late 30's I experienced many issues with my hair and scalp. I tried so many hair care products but nothing seemed to work. My hair had been striped of it's natural oils and my scalp had become irritated by the harsh chemicals in store bought products.

I was so fed up with my itchy scalp and dry brittle hair, I decided to create my own natural organic shampoo. I found out that replacing the harsh additives with good organic ingredients like aloe vera, coconut oil and essential oils had an amazing soothing, healing and hydrating effect.

This personal journey not only transformed my scalp and hair for good, it added fuel to my desire to help others with similar issues.

How long does it take to adjust to a natural shampoo?

Transitioning to a natural organic shampoo prompts a remarkable re-balancing process for your scalp and hair, especially if it's been subjected to the harsh stripping effects of commercial products like mine was. For me it took around two weeks but don't worry if it takes longer for your scalp and hair to adapt to the absence of synthetic ingredients; this in completely normal. It doesn't always happen but initially your hair may undergo a detox phase. During this phase, whilst your scalp is restoring your natural oils and moisture balance, like me, you might experience oiliness and 'not so great' looking hair. Within 5-16 days your sebum levels will be re-balanced and you'll notice a significant improvement in the overall health of your scalp and appearance of your hair. It will transform to nourished, soft, resilient and healthy hair, thanks to the gentle yet effective formulation of natural ingredients.

How often should you use natural shampoo?

The frequency you should use natural organic shampoo depends on your individual hair type and lifestyle, but generally, it's advisable to use it 1-3 times a week to maintain scalp health and hair balance. In the first week I washed my hair every day but by week three I was able to reduce this to once or twice a week.

How do you start using a natural organic shampoo?

Start by selecting a product that aligns with your hair type and concerns, ensuring it's free from synthetic chemicals and harsh additives.

  1. Before application, thoroughly wet your hair with warm water to open the cuticles and allow for better product absorption.
  2. Take a moderate amount of shampoo and lather it between your palms, then massage slowly with your fingertips, thoroughly working the shampoo into the scalp (without scratching the scalp) for at least 2 minutes. If using a bar, rub it all over your wet head and work into scalp as above.
  3. Lather is not important to the cleansing process but working the shampoo right into the scalp is important to let its nourishing ingredients penetrate the hair follicles.
  4. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water still massaging the scalp with your fingertips until all traces of the shampoo are removed.
  5. Repeat the process if desired. If you're washing your hair every day or every other day you might find one application is enough.
  6. For optimal results, follow up with a natural conditioner to help restore moisture and leave your hair feeling soft and healthy.
  7. Gently towel dry and leave to get completely dry naturally if possible (especially if you have an itchy/dry scalp or damaged hair)

Natural Shampoo

How to choose a natural shampoo?

Natural shampoos come in various types to cater to different preferences and needs. Whether you opt for a natural liquid shampoo or a natural shampoo bar, look for organic plant-based ingredients, avoiding harsh chemicals and synthetic fragrances.

Ingredients to avoid:

  • Silicones: While silicones can provide temporary smoothing and shine, they can also build up on the hair over time, leading to dullness and weighing down the hair. Silicone-free formulas are preferable.

  • Parabens: These synthetic preservatives have been linked to hormone disruption and other health concerns, so it's best to opt for paraben-free formulations.

  • Synthetic fragrances: Artificial fragrances may contain phthalates, which can also disrupt hormones and potentially cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Look for shampoos with natural, plant-based fragrances instead.

  • By avoiding these ingredients and opting for shampoos with natural, plant-based, and gentle formulations, you can help promote healthier hair and scalp without exposing yourself to potentially harmful chemicals.

Natural organic liquid shampoos provide effective cleansing whilst nourishing the hair with botanical extracts and essential oils, leaving it soft, shiny, and healthy. At New Dawn they come in 100% recycled, refillable bottles so are the obvious choice for many.

On the other hand our shampoo soap bars are completely plastic-free eco-friendly alternatives that come with fully compostable packaging. Like our organic liquid shampoo they contain natural oils that help moisturise and condition the hair too.

While both options offer similar benefits, the main difference lies in their form and packaging. Liquid shampoos offer convenience and ease of use, while shampoo soap bars are more sustainable and travel-friendly. Ultimately, choosing between the two depends on personal preference and lifestyle factors, but both options contribute to a cleaner, greener beauty routine.

Is natural shampoo better for hair growth?

When you switch to a natural shampoo, your hair may experience improved hydration, reduced scalp irritation, and enhanced overall health, all of which will help with hair growth. If you want to boost your hair growth further, use hair care containing lots of organic aloe vera and organic essential oils of Lavender, Peppermint or Benchmark Thyme because of their ability to stimulate the tiny blood vessels of the scalp where the hair follicles are created. This stimulation helps to increase the blood flow which carries the nutrients so vital for the follicles.

People sometimes try natural shampoo once and for various reasons go back to their regular shampoo. It can take a little getting used to, but stick with it! It's definitely worth it when you see the longer term results.
